Varsity Golf News

Monday, May 8

The Varsity Boys Golf team will compete in the Class A Private State Tournament at Green Island Country Club in Columbus on Monday, May 22 and Tuesday, May 23. The state tournament will be a 36 hole event. The boys earned their trip to state by finishing in second place at the recent Area 2 Tournament. Prince fired a team total 310, but lost to rival Athens Academy who totaled a 307. Will Kahlstorf paced the Wolverines with a 72, while Peyton Shedd and Reid Baker each scored 79. Bradley Lastinger added an 80 to round out the scoring.

The Girls team barely missed qualifying as a team with a fourth place finish. However, Hope Hewatt shot 99 to qualify for the state tournament as a low medalist on a nonqualifying team.

Girls: The Prince Girls golf team is composed of three sophomores—Delaney Cook, Hope Hewatt, and Molly Howard. The girls have played four matches and are steadily improving. Expectations are high following last year’s Second Place finish at the Area Tournament.

Boys: The Prince Boys Golf Team is on a record-setting pace this season. In the Apple Mountain Invitational Tournament the boys placed sixth out of twenty teams. They followed this with a First Place finish at the twenty-one team UGA Classic as they set a new school tournament team scoring record with a 297, and last weekend they took Third Place at the sixteen team Taylormade Classic.

Will Kahlstorf was Low Medalist at the Taylormade, and finished second at UGA as he fired a school record 67. Bradley Lastinger, Peyton Shedd, Reid Baker, and Grant Roland have also made strong contributions for the Wolverines.

In addition, the boys are undefeated in dual match play. On Monday, Will, Bradley, and Peyton each shot a one-under 35, another new school record, in a defeat of Madison County. Against all competitors, the boys have an overall record of 51-7.

Next up:   The Ed Hoard Classic at the Athens Country Club on Monday, March 27. This tournament includes all the high school golf teams in Oconee and Clarke counties.
