Tickets Available Now for Freaky Friday
Freaky Friday is a new musical based on the novel and films by the same title. The story follows Ellie, an angsty teenager played by senior Emilie David, and her protective mother, Katherine, played by senior Riley Wilson. The play begins the day before Katherine’s wedding. Ellie is preoccupied with teenage things and fights with her little brother Fletcher who is played by freshman David Simpkins. Ellie is not thrilled that after her father’s death, her mother is remarrying a man named Mike, played by senior Jack Johnston.
The mother and daughter get into a big disagreement and accidentally wish the other would change while they are holding a “magical” hourglass which breaks and causes them to switch bodies. They have only one day to switch back before the wedding. During the time they switch bodies, Katherine, who is now a student, joins the schoolwide hunt which is an intensive scavenger hunt. Her two best friends, Monica (Willow Smith) and Karl (Sammy Hodges) don’t understand why Ellie is acting so strangely. The hunt is led by the Listmaster, Adam, who is played by senior Thompson Sewell. During the switch, Ellie, who is now switched into an adult, experiences the challenges of running her own catering business. The staff of cater waiters adds to the chaos of the unexpected switch.
This musical explores themes of control, acceptance, and responsibility for actions. There is something for audience members of all ages to connect with in this humorous script. As the two main characters experience the challenges of each other’s lives, they discover that they cannot “control everything.” Isn’t that a lesson we each could learn?
