Fiddler on the Roof is a beloved classic with well-known songs such as “If I Were a Rich Man,” “Sunrise, Sunset,” and “Matchmaker. Set in the little Russian village of Anatevka in the early 1900s, Fiddler on the Roof tells the story of Tevye, the Dairyman (senior Finn McGinnis), His wife, Golde (senior Emma Allen), and their five daughters (sophomore Lily Smith, sophomore Claire Gann, sophomore Kaylor Jones, senior Lauren Lavender, and junior Rinne Furlow).
The eldest three daughters begin to break tradition when they fall in love with men whom the matchmaker (sophomore Jolee McElveen) did not choose for them. Tzeitel (Smith) falls in love with a poor tailor named Motel (sophomore Jay Lavender) and begs her father to allow them to be married. Hodel (Gann) follows suit when she falls for a young Jewish radical named Perchik (senior Walker Johnson). Chava (Jones) sees that her father gave permission to her other sisters to marry the man of their choice, and she dares to ask if she can marry a non-Jewish Russian named Fyedka (junior Jeremiah Lill). Tevye (McGinnis) is left asking how far he can bend before he breaks.
Tradition! Without our traditions, our lives would be as shaky as a fiddler on the roof!
