Prince Students Excel in Academic Competitions
HIGH Q TOURNAMENT
The Prince Avenue Christian School Academic Team advanced to the quarter finals of the High Q competition by defeating 6A Walton High School 475-465 in the second round of the televised tournament. The Prince team, which includes senior captain John Butt, junior Curry Cross and freshmen Robert West and Chase Deatrick will compete against defending High Q champion Marist High in March.
Academic Team advisor David Douglas describes this victory as “David vs Goliath,” noting that Prince Avenue is one of the smallest schools in the state while Walton High is one of the largest. He says Walton High has won the High Q competition thirteen times in the 26-year history of the competition, while this is just the third year that Prince Avenue has competed in the tournament.
Prince Avenue's victory will air on WSB-TV on Saturday, February 8 at 2:30 pm.
History Bowl and National History Bee
The Wolverine Varsity Academic team qualified for the National History Bowl on January 20th. Prince Avenue defeated a team from Cedar Shoals to clinch a trip to Nationals for the second consecutive year. The National tournament will be held in late April outside of Washington D.C.
In November, four members of the academic team also qualified for the National History Bee. Chase Deatrick, Marlan Adams and Robert West have qualified at the JV level. John Butt qualified for the varsity tournament. John has finished in the top 5 at numerous state and regional history bees over the past four years. John also qualified for the National US History Bee with a strong second place finish on January 31 at Cedar Shoals.
