Prince Parent and Nurse, Julia Behr, Speaks at Lunch and Learn
This week as part of the “Lunch and Learn” program, Augusta University Assistant Dean and Prince Avenue parent, Julia Behr, spoke to PACS high school students about the nursing profession. Mrs. Behr spoke to the students about how history and the media have over time affected the perception people have of the nursing profession. Florence Nightingale, at the age of 16 believed that she heard God’s voice urging her to do something special to help others. By the age of 16, against her parents’ wishes she went to nursing school.
Mrs. Behr referenced her favorite quote about nursing from Florence Nightingale, “Nursing is an art: and if it is to be made an art, it requires an exclusive devotion as hard a preparation as any painter’s or sculptor’s work; for what is the having to do with dead canvas or dead marble, compared with having to do with the living body, the temple of God’s spirit? It is one of the Fine Arts: I had almost said, the finest of Fine Arts.”
Mrs. Behr then went on to discuss the various degrees available to those interested in the nursing field. All students in attendance at Lunch & Learn received highlighters and hand sanitizer, a must-have for nurses to keep the germs away.
