Oklahoma! was the first musical Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote together, and it sparked a Broadway revolution known as the “golden age” of musical theatre.
See the Prince Avenue Fine Arts production of this timeless classic on Saturday, October 20th at 2:30 pm and 7:00 pm and Sunday, October 21st at 2:30 pm. All shows will be at Brightstone Theatre: 560 Jerry Smith Drive, Watkinsville, GA, 30677.
The year is 1907. Oklahoma will soon become a state. Curly and Laurey (played by juniors Jack Johnston and Emilie David) are trying to decide their feelings for one another. Jud Fry (Senior, Christopher Harding) also has eyes for Laurey, but her Aunt Eller (Junior, Chloe Ferguson) is keeping an eye on the situation. Jud is a loyal worker on Eller and Laurey’s farm, but his troubled past and isolated behavior leave the town uneasy.
Comic relief comes in the form of Ado Annie (Junior, Riley Wilson), Will Parker (Junior, Thompson Sewell), and Ali Hakim (Sophomore, Hendley Jones). The three are stuck in a love triangle, and when asked which one she likes best, Ado Annie responds, “Whatever one I’m with.”
Oklahoma is full of singing, dancing, and witty one-liners. Among the humor and energy of the buzzing territory is a beautiful story which is endearing, cautious, and heart-warming.
