Alumnus John Cross Returns to Campus with BBQ Business
At the recent Prince Annual Fund kick-off event, “Prince on the Green”, one of the food vendors was a familiar face. John Cross attended PACS for 13 years and graduated with the Class of 2016. He is currently attending Piedmont University and pursuing his Master of Business Administration degree.
After working in the barbecue industry and cooking for friends and family, John launched his own catering business, Brown Dog BBQ, in the summer of 2021. The event at Prince was his first large catering event. John says, “To return to Prince for my first large event was a dream come true. The ability to serve some of my old teachers and administrators that helped me graduate from high school was incredible.”
And “incredible” is what patrons thought of John’s barbecue! It was one of the most popular spots of the night offering delicious pulled pork, mac-n-cheese, baked beans, and even banana pudding. Also, these items were happily served by other Prince alums. John explains, “Even though I am the sole owner, I have been able to rely on some great friends that are also alumni of Prince Avenue. Chris Nunn and Tyler Breedlove have helped me serve at large events over the past few months.”
John’s goal for Brown Dog BBQ is to be the premier barbecue option for tailgates and large gatherings in the Athens area. His menu items range from pulled pork brisket to beef wellington and bacon-wrapped quail. Watch for his food service on campus in the future. Prince families have already requested a return visit.
