Prince Avenue Christian School Honors Veterans with Heartfelt Ceremony
Written by Amy Frierson
As veterans and guests arrived for the Prince Avenue Christian School Veterans Day Ceremony, they were met with enthusiastic cheers of “Thank you for your service!” from third-grade students waving American flags in heartfelt appreciation.
The annual Veterans Day Ceremony has become a beloved Prince tradition—one that not only honors the service and sacrifice of military parents, grandparents, alumni, and community members, but also teaches students the importance of patriotism and the cost of freedom.
The program opened with prayer from Head of School Col Seth Hathaway, followed by the posting of the colors. From that point forward, students led the ceremony, beginning with the Pledge of Allegiance. The Prince Avenue Advanced Band and the Voices of Prince joined together to perform beautiful renditions of The National Anthem and America the Beautiful.
Students shared the history and meaning of Veterans Day, while lower school students reflected on the symbolism of the POW/MIA white table, inspired by America’s White Table by Margo Raven. Veterans in attendance were then invited to stand as the anthem of each branch of service played, receiving warm applause and gratitude from the audience.
To conclude, students read letters of thanks to veterans and their families, expressing appreciation for their courage and sacrifice. Many veterans contributed photos of themselves in uniform, which, along with student artwork and handwritten notes, created a touching visual tribute that personalized the celebration.
Following the ceremony, students, faculty, and staff enjoyed the opportunity to visit with veterans and their families, concluding a very special time together.
