Kaitlin Appleby Explores Career Opportunities
Prince Avenue Christian School Junior Kaitlin Appleby begins the new school year with a better understanding of just where she wants to be in just a few short years. And a career in pharmacy seems to be in her future. Katilin was selected to participate in the University of Georgia College of Pharmacy Summer Science Academy, and found that this scientific field was all she expected it to be, and more.
“I learned that pharmacy is so much more than just retail sales of drugs,” says Kaitlin . “And I really discovered that I liked the idea of compounding drugs and practicing pharmacy in a clinical setting, like at a hospital.” The Summer Science Academy was established by the University of Georgia College of Pharmacy to give students who have a strong aptitude in science and math the opportunity to attend classes and field trips which focus on pharmacy and health sciences.
“The classes are taught by UGA faculty and included laboratory instruction in compounding, discussions on protein synthesis and research, and how pharmacy impacts everyday life,” according to UGA’s Sheila Roberson. As a seminar participant, Kaitlin made hand sanitizer in the pharmacy lab, visited the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, worked on other labs and projects, and listened to lectures about pharmacy and the University of Georgia.
Kaitlin says that one of the best parts of the week was being able to make connections with people who also want to go to pharmacy school. “I have always been interested in a career that will allow me to help people,” she says. “I am interested in the medical field, but don’t really want to be a doctor. Pharmacy may be the answer.”
“It was a really good week,” says Kaitlin. “I will definitely consider going into this program when I graduate from Prince Avenue and go to college.”
