Lady Wolverine Tennis Finishes Season in State Tourney
The Lady Wolverine Varsity Tennis team completed its season yesterday after losing to reigning state champion Mount Pisgah Christian in the second round of the state tournament.
The team was lead this year by singles players Mary Grace Heath, Mary Catherine McElroy, and Gracyn Lastinger, who dominated most opponents throughout the season. Seniors Jordan Malaier and Anna Zeagler played consistently all season at number two doubles, and Kandace Garrett played well with Maddie Meeks and Cancy Blackwell at number one doubles. Both doubles teams helped scored numerous team points throughout the season.
Following a 10-2 regular season record, the team entered the region tournament as the number 2 seed in the north bracket. They defeated Towns County in the first round 3-2, and Hebron Christian 4-1 in the second round of the tournament. The Lady Wolverines lost to Athens Academy in the finals 3-0.
In the first round of the state playoffs, Prince Avenue hosted its first-ever home match at Oconee Veterans Park in Watkinsville, and defeated Washington-Wilkes 4-0 to advance to the second round against Mt. Pisgah.
