Lady Wolverines Finish 2nd in State A-Private
The Lady Wolverine Softball Team finished the season 2nd in the state, losing in the finals to Eagles Landing Christian Academy 14-7. This is the third year in a row the team finished as the runners-up.
The team defeated Tatnall Academy in the first game of the elite eight tournament, 1-0, scoring in the bottom half of the seventh inning with two outs. That victory advanced the Lady Wolverines in the winner's bracket, where they went on to defeat First Presbyterian Day School 1-0 Thursday evening.
The victory over FPD set up a re-match between Eagles Landing, who defeated Prince Avenue last year to win the state title. The Lady Wolverines fought hard but fell to Eagles Landing 8-7, dropping them to the loser's bracket and a 9:00 am Saturday game against FPD again.
Playing under stressful weather conditions–at game time the temperature was 39 degrees with 22 mile per hour winds–Prince Avenue persevered, winning the first game 9-3, and again earning the opportunity to face Eagles Landing in the finals. Prince Avenue, however, would have to beat the Lady Chargers twice in a row to win the state title.
Emily continued to pitch well, and the team hit well, and they beat Eagles Landing 12-9 to set up the championship game. Playing for the first time on the Columbus Softball Complex Stadium (the site of the 1996 Olympic Softball games), Prince Avenue finally ran out of gas and lost 14-7 to finish the season second in the state.
Heading to the Elite 8
The Lady Wolverine softball team defeated Savannah Christian 8-0 and 9-0 in the double-header games on Wednesday at the Wolverine Athletic Complex. Emmy Soles pitched a perfect game for the first victory, and Skylar Sparr pitched a shut out in the second.
The victory sends the Region 8A champions to the Elite Eight for the third year in a row. They will travel to Columbus next week for the tournament.
