Solar Eclipse Viewing and Wolverines Unleashed Carnival
On Monday, August 21st, Prince Avenue Christian School will participate in a once-in-a-lifetime event as students, teachers, and parents collectively view The Great American Eclipse of 2017 followed by the Wolverines Unleashed Family Fun Carnival.
A total eclipse of the Sun is “a scene of unimaginable beauty; the Moon completely blocks the Sun, daytime becomes a deep twilight, and the Sun’s corona shimmers in the darkened sky.” (www.greatamericaneclipse.com) Athens, Georgia is fortunate to be very close to the area of totality allowing viewers to observe the eclipse at 99% totality.
Because this is a special opportunity, the school has planned activities for the day that are both educational and fun from a Biblical worldview. The afternoon dismissal schedule will be adjusted to accommodate the eclipse times and to ensure safety.
Please take note of the following details:
- To watch the partial stages of the eclipse, proper eye protection must be worn. Normal sunglasses are not safe. PACS will provide one pair of glasses per student from Explore Scientific. This is one of five manufacturers on NASA’s recommended vendor list. Parents can read about the specifications for the glasses HERE. Students will be instructed by teachers on how to use the glasses and watch an instructional safety video that can be viewed HERE.
- Middle and high school students are encouraged to bring a beach towel to sit on while viewing.
- Students are encouraged to participate in Spirit Day dress by wearing “black out” clothes.
- There will be no elementary or middle school sports practices after school on Monday. JV and Varsity practices will begin at 4:15 pm.
- Parents who do not want their child to participate in the eclipse viewing have two options. (1) E-mail your principal no later than 9:00 a.m. Monday morning, and your student will be supervised by a teacher inside a classroom during the eclipse, or (2) parents may pick their child up from school no later than 1:00 p.m. With teachers and students in and out of classrooms during the afternoon, locating a child for a pick up after 1:00 pm will be problematic.
- The afternoon bus schedule will run 40 minutes late in coordination with dismissal times.
The Eclipse Day Schedule is as follows:
2:00 pm: Lower school students will be escorted to the practice field and seated by class.
2:10 pm: Middle and high School Students will go to the practice field for observation.
2:38 pm: Eclipse totality
3:30 pm: Lower School Dismissal
3:50 pm: Middle School Dismissal
4:00 pm: High School Dismissal
4:00 – 8:00 pm: “Wolverines Unleashed” Family Fun Carnival
Immediately following dismissal, the school will continue the celebration with the yearly “Wolverines Unleashed” Family Fun Carnival.
This exciting and fun event is for the entire PACS community. PACS students, families, and friends will be able to enjoy time together as they jump on inflatables, slide down the jumbo slide, get their faces painted, and enjoy popcorn, sno cones, and moon pies. In addition, the Chick-fil-A Food Truck will be serving food for purchase, so bring your picnic blanket and enjoy dinner in the midst of all of the fun.
The Admission Ticket to this free event is a donation or pledge to the 2017-2018 Annual Fund. The Annual Fund is a yearly campaign that supports the PACS operating budget. A family’s once-a-year contribution helps to bridge the gap between tuition and the true cost of educating a student. A tax deductible gift to the Annual Fund keeps PACS tuition reasonable. Please consider giving generously. The goal is 100% participation.
Donating online is a fast efficient way to support the Annual Fund. Simply click on the link below or on the school web site, log in, and make a gift. Donors may choose to give a one-time donation or schedule reoccurring automatic gifts using a credit card or bank account.
