Abby Frost’s Essay Chosen as State Winner of DAR Contest
Prince Avenue Christian School junior Abby Frost was recently notified that the American History essay she submitted to the Apalachee Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) has been selected as the essay contest state winner. Abby responded to the prompt, “Advantages and Disadvantages of Working Relationships Between Foreign Parties”. Specifically, Abby’s essay researched how Columbus convinced King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella to finance his first voyage.
Abby’s essay began as a simple assignment from her Dual Enrollment History teacher, Elizabeth Barry. Mrs. Barry graded the essay as a test grade but also submitted the papers to the Apalachee Chapter of the DAR. Abby’s essay was selected first as the PACS school winner and then progressed as the Apalachee Chapter winner, DAR District winner, and now state winner. Abby’s winning essay will now be forwarded to the Southeastern Division Vice Chairman for the next round of competition.
Although Abby, who came to Prince during her 8th-grade year, spent a great deal of effort on research and writing, she credits the support and instruction of her PACS teachers for preparing her for the challenge. “Before I came to Prince, I had never written an essay. My English teachers from Prince helped me develop my writing to a point where I could actually write. I could never have written the essay without Mr. Phillips' AP English class, and Mrs. Barry helped me when I had questions about the prompt and my resources.”
Mrs. Barry is very excited about her student’s impressive accomplishment. ”Abby is the type of student who reminds you why you became a teacher. She actively participates in the classroom with a smile and asks insightful questions. Because I get the privilege of teaching her day in and day out, I was overjoyed but not surprised when I received word that her essay was deemed the best in the state. Her consistent work ethic was given the opportunity to shine through this essay, and I am so glad she received the recognition she deserves.”
Abby and her family are invited to attend the Georgia State Society DAR School Youth Luncheon to be held in Atlanta on April 7th where she will receive a certificate and award.
